“Free” Compromise?

Last week President Obama announced what is being called a compromise on the Obamacare provision requiring that religious organizations to cover contraceptives & birth control.  Obama is mandating that private insurance companies cover these services “for free” so that these institutions do not pay for them directly.

Nothing in this world is free. Religious organizations who provide health insurance would still be paying for these services through their premiums.  So, no compromise.

However, the larger issue here is that President Obama has used unconstitutional power to dictate what a private insurance company must cover & how much it charges for this coverage.  Where does he get this power? On Fox News Sunday, White House Chief of Staff Jack Lew told Chris Wallace that this power came from the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or Obamacare:

This is exactly what critics of Obamacare cautioned about. The federal government has unprecedented central control over most aspects of health care.

  • They are mandating that every American purchase health insurance.
  • Health & Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has the power to grant waivers to select organizations, exempting them from the provisions of Obamacare. Many of the 1,231 waivers as of January 2012 were for labor unions.
  • Obamacare will impose price controls on private insurance companies, which will drive many out of business.

Let’s assume for a moment that you think President Obama will always act in your best interests.  Do you believe that every future president will? And do you want to risk setting a precedent that gives future leaders this kind of power?
